allegory

wearing only his underpants, the jackass is required to crawl on his hands and knees through a room full of mousetraps.

it is surreal.

the traps are snapping as he moves, setting off other traps as well as causing the jackass to writhe and convulse.

pain is an advance on the wages of sin, but this advance is quickly spent. the whole spectacle lasts only about thirty seconds and showing the traps going off repeatedly, even in slow motion, does not actually increase or prolong the pain.

thirty seconds over the course of a lifetime is a relatively small affair.

the crawling jackass does not go to the hospital to be treated or anything because, all totaled, it's a gag that has one important characteristic which allows us to laughingly embrace its slapstick nature:

ultimately, no mousetrap can catch man or mule.
